Come observe at Blake!

UPDATE:

There will not be a bus because of lack of interest. If you would like to observe rounds, we are at the Hyatt Regency, 1300 Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis. Rounds tomorrow start at 8 and go all day.

-----------------------------

Mike and Abbie have set up a great opportunity for those of you not competing at Blake to come watch rounds. Debaters from across the country will be there, so it is a great chance to flow some high level varsity debates.

We will be leaving from the upper doors of North at 7:15 and returning around 5:30.

Please let Mike know if you plan to attend (so we can make sure you're on the bus). This is open to ALL debaters who aren't competing, not just novices.

In Junior Varsity, Alex Ryan (sophomore, North)was 4-1 in preliminary rounds.

Apple Valley Results

Lakeville Debaters competed against students from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, California, Nevada, Texas, Florida and Alabama this past weekend. The team had an excellent showing, proving just how competitive the team is this year.

The collective performance of Lakeville South students resulted in Lakeville South receiving the third place sweepstakes award.

In novice, Lakeville South's Ruthie Nelson (2012) was undefeated throughout preliminary rounds. Ruthie was an octafinalist (top 16), along with Kayla Dharampaul (LNHS 2011). Raffi Garnighian (LSHS 2012) was a quarterfinalist (top 8). Grace O'Brien (LSHS 2012), Jacqueline Schmitt (LSHS 2012) and Yaphet Getachew (LNHS 2012) all had enough wins, but not enough points to clear to octafinals.

In JV, Lakeville South's Dylan Slinger (2011) was a quarterfinalist.

In Varsity, Lakeville South's Christian Keil (2009) advanced from a field of 150 top competitors into the top 8. He lost on a 2-1 decision to Ross Brown from Iowa. Christian was also the fourth place speaker. His performance at this tournament resulted in his second bid to the Tournament of Champions, securing him a spot in that competition to be held in Lexington, KY in May.

In Public Forum debate, Lakeville North's Steven Elliott and Karen Zhou (2010) advanced to octafinals (top 16). Steven was the fourth place speaker.

Although not a tournament result, it should also be noted that Karen is currently ranked 10th in the nation for her NFL points. Her placement may shift slightly as other students have points entered, but it is an amazing accomplishment to be recognized for this honor as one of the top National Forensics League competitors in the country.

Eagan Results

Lakeville Debate had another successful weekend at the Eagan Wildcat Invitational. Next week we go to Apple Valley, where we will be competing against students from across the U.S. for highly coveted marble apples.

At Eagan, Varsity students had an excellent showing and received four of the top five places. Second went to Christian Keil (LSHS '09), third to Wes Brand (LSHS '11), Fourth to Catherine Eichmann (LNHS '10) and Fifth to Jayant Tripathy (LNHS '11). Christian also received fourth speaker.

Several of our novices competed in JV for the first time and did extremely well against more experienced debaters. Yaphet Getachew (LNHS '12) and Leema John (LSHS '12) both had 4-2 records and Jacqueline Schmitt (LSHS '12) was the third place speaker.

In novice, Ruthie Nelson (LSHS '12) placed as eighth speaker and Grace O'Brien (LSHS '12) placed as fourth speaker. Rafi Garnighian (LSHS '12) had a 4-2 record.

In Public Forum, Steven Elliott (LNHS '10) was fifth place speaker and Karen Zhou (LNHS '10) was fourth place speaker.

Schedule for Apple Valley 11/7-8

See post below for who is competing.

The tournament is November 7-8. You don't have school on Friday. Everyone
competes on both days.

Transportation
On Friday, we will take a bus (time later, but probably around 1) from Lakeville North to Apple Valley. (If getting a ride from home to North is the only reason you couldn't otherwise go, we will find a ride for you).

Friday, we will go to four different schools (Varsity is at Apple Valley HS, JV at Valley Middle School, Novice at Falcon Ridge MS and Public Forum at Scott Highlands MS). We will not take a bus back because it would take too long to go to all of the schools, so you will need to have parents pick you up (car pool).

Saturday morning, you will need to get a ride to the same building you were at on Friday. After prelims for all divisions of LD, there will be a bus to the high school. Outrounds for ALL divisions of LD will be at Apple Valley High School. Public Forum will have all rounds at Scott Highlands and have their own awards ceremony. All LDers should plan to stay through the awards ceremony at AVHS at 5:15. In the past, we have had either students competing or students wanting to observe late rounds after awards and many students who want to leave. Because of this, we have ended up with very few people on the bus and you will need to get a ride home.

Plan to carpool. If you drive yourself, you absolutely, under no circumstances are to leave until all your rounds are over (i.e. you may not leave to get food).

Schedule
Everyone starts at the high school for registration and announcements. The bus will take you all to the high school. If you are going to another school, there will be a shuttle bus to take you there.

Halloween Treats

Treat today at practice to anyone who EITHER:
A. emails Liz before 5:30 with an argument on the new topic that is not listed on the topic analysis. If you are in PF, send an argument on health care; if you are in LD, send an argument about felon disenfranchisement. It can be an argument for either side, but it must be a complete argument with a claim, warrant and impact.

OR

B. Prove you attended the North speech meeting by bringing the auditions packet to practice today.

If you go to South or are already on the North speech team, you must do option A.

Remember, unless you went to Bronx, 1 case is due TODAY.

Friday

Because McCain is speaking at South on Friday, we need to move the bus meeting location from the Athletic doors. Everything else stays the same. South students are excused at 1:35, change promptly and meet at 1:45. The bus will be in the "Bus Loading Zone" where buses normally pick up and drop off students (I don't know where this is, I'm assuming those of you who attend the school do).

I have the following students excused to observe Varsity debates. Meet at main doors at South at 1:45 or Upper Doors at North at 2:00. If you're on this list, we expect you to be on the bus so PLEASE keep Abbie informed of any changes.
-Kate Vold (South)
-Jaqueline Schmitt (South)
-Vanessa Johnston (South)
- Yaphet Getachew (North)

If you are not on this list and would like to observe Varsity rounds on Friday, please e-mail Liz.

Greenhill Round Robin

Christian Keil is in Dallas, TX this weekend competing at the Greenhill Fall Classic.

He was one of only sixteen debaters in the country to be invited to compete at the Greenhill Round Robin. He debated seven rounds over the past two days and that tournament ended late last night.

This morning he begins competing in the regular tournament. I will let you know updates as I hear them.

Friday, September 12, 2008

List-serv update

We will no longer be using the list-serv because it is difficult to manage and I lost administrative access. There is a Google Group that will serve the same function. Students should have received an e-mail inviting them to the group.

If students did not receive that e-mail, they should visit the group site and request access.

Additional Practice Time

Megan is available on TUESDAY from 4-6 at NORTH in room 309 for extra help and review of cases, rebuttals or other skills. This practice is optional, but highly encouraged.

Please take advantage of this opportunity to get some more work time with a coach.

Practice Thursday

Reminder that there is practice this Thursday at South.
Novice LD debaters: 5:30-7:30.
Returning LD Debaters: 5:30-8
All Public Forum Debaters: 6:30-8

Thursday is the absolute final day for any new novices to join the team. Any student who wishes to debate must attend Thursday or will not be allowed to compete this year.

Experienced debaters: Bring a copy of your case PRINTED to practice and also have an electronic copy sent to your coach before 5:30. Failure to do either of these constitutes a late assignment.

Thursday, August 28, 2008

Tournament Availability Form

I just posted a document called preseasonreg.doc to the Drop site. If you do not have a password, please contact a coach.

This form indicates which tournaments you plan on attending. You may change your registration between now and the deadline I give you on the tournament registration list, usually abut 10 days before the tournament. Use this to indicate those tournaments which you now know you cannot attend for any reason.

Practice Attendance

It is important that debaters consistently attend practice. We have unique material to cover every day and missing practice makes it difficult to keep track of who is missing what information. Starting next Thursday, September 4, practices are regularly scheduled on Mondays and Thursdays. The schedule is consistent from week to week to allow planning for other events and activities, but attending practice needs to be a priority.

If a student needs to miss practice, the student should contact their coach prior to the missed practice (or as soon as possible after).

We require consistent attendance to ensure that foundational information is taught and to practice skills that require repetition for success. Just like athletes train to become better at their sport, debaters need consistent practice to improve.

Thank you for your cooperation in this.

Thursday 8/26

Novices (first year) LD Debaters will have a 1 hour practice at 5:30 in the South IMC.

Public Forum and JV/ Varsity LD will NOT have practice on Thursday.

NO PRACTICE for ALL DEBATERS on Monday, Sept 1 (Labor Day).

Normal schedule resumes on Thursday, Sept 4. The normal schedule can be found on the right side of the website.

Saturday, August 23, 2008

Reminder: There is practice on Monday 5:30-7:30 (novice), 5:30-8 (JV/ Varsity) in the IMC at North.

There is no practice for JV/ Varsity this Thursday, Novice practice is TBD with Abbie.

No practice for Public Forum this week.

Please add yourself to the team listserv by entering your e-mail and name here.

If you are receiving emails with [Lakeville Debate] (in brackets like that) in the subject line, you are subscribed to the list.

It sends you a welcome e-mail once you are subscribed, so you will know you did it successfully. If you tried that already and it didn't work, email me. (Be patient, I have to approve the addition before it sends you that email).

Rules, Policies and Procedures

The rules, policies and procedures discussed yesterday will be online later today. I apologize for the delay.

A lot of you have asked for more information about Public Forum Debate. Here are a couple helpful things I have found.

Activity Forms

All debaters need to turn in the activities forms and pay fees. Fees can be paid via check or online.

Turn forms into the Activities Office at your high school. The forms are the same, but you need to be registered at the school you would like to letter at.

Dylan is JV Champion at National Debate Forum

Dylan Slinger won the JV Final Round at the National Debate Forum in Boston.

After two weeks of debate camp, Dylan placed as the top speaker in the tournament and won the JV division.

Congratulations, Dylan!

Welcome, New Debaters

Welcome to Lakeville Debate.

If you are interested in being on the team this year, please come to the first practice on Tuesday at 5:30 in the LNHS Media Center. We will meet the coaches, get to know some people on the team and give you more information about what debate is to help you decide if the activity is the right fit for you.

Here is the informational brochure handed out at the Activity Fairs in case you need another copy.

If you aren't able to come to practice on Tuesday or have more questions about debate, please e-mail Liz Vieira.

NO CODE MEETING MONDAY

Debaters and their parents DO NOT need to attend the code meeting on Monday at 6.

After looking over the agenda and discussing it with the AD's, we decided that it would be better to have an AD talk to debaters and their parents separately because most of Monday's meeting will concern only athletes.

Byron Olson, the Athletic/ Activities Director at North, will be at the Debate pre-season meeting for parents and students to address how MSHSL and school policy affects our program. That meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday, September 15 at 7:30 at North, room TBD. Once I can confirm that date and location, I will send out more information.

It is mandatory for the school and MSHSL that students and parents attend a meeting on these issues.

School Forms and MANDATORY Code Meeting

Because debate is interscholastic and competes under MSHSL rules, debaters need to fill out eligibility forms and pay the $110 activity fee. Forms are available on the school website and fees can be paid using a credit card. Please pay the fee to the school you attend (or for 8th graders, the school you plan to attend).

Lakeville North Activities
Lakeville South Activities

NOTE: Debaters do NOT need to complete the physical.

Additionally, there is a mandatory meeting on MONDAY, AUGUST 11 at 6 pm for debaters and their parents. All students must attend because this is a school/ MSHSL requirement, not just debate. The debate team will attend the meeting at North (unless parents need to attend the meeting at South for other sports-- the content of the meeting will be the same but will break off into teams at the end which is why we need most debaters in the same place).

Interested in debate?

All students are welcome to join the debate team.

The attached file contains information about what debate is and what the Lakeville Debate team is all about.

If you would like to join the team, send us your information and plan on coming to practice on August 12 at 5:30 in the North Library.

For further questions, contact coach Liz Vieira.

First Practice of 2008

The first practice of the 2008 season will be Tuesday, August 12 at 5:30 in the North Library.

Students interested in joining the team should plan to attend.

Experienced debaters, come ready to shake the dust off and get some important skills work in before the topic comes out August 15.

I am trying to make some changes to the html code on the site to make things easier to find/ see. My main goal is to post summaries so you can get information like bus times quickly without scrolling through every tournament list.
